The Hellfire Club is a mysterious club of the ultra-wealthy that worshipped the Phoenix Force.
History[]
According to Sebastian Shaw, the Hellfire Club got its start in Ancient Egypt and continued through revolutionary France and the Founding Fathers of the United States. Shaw even suggested that the Bald Eagle on the United States national seal actually represented a Phoenix. Whatever the case, in the 21st Century the alignment in the stars necessary for summoning the Phoenix Force was slated to occur. Jean Gray was found as the host of the Phoenix Force, and in ensuring her safety, the Hellfire Club funded Charles Xavier and the X-Men. With alignment forty-eight hours away, the X-Men were invited to a gala where the Hellfire Club would reveal themselves as Xavier's benefactors. Gray, Xavier, Ororo Munroe, and Piotr Rasputin arrived, and the latter three were neutralized, with Gray taken to a ritual room. After billions of years, the Phoenix Force returned to Earth. It killed Shaw and the Hellfire Club's inner circle near instantaneously. Shaw's wealth was given to Xavier to continue to fund the X-Men.
