S.H.I.E.L.D is a team of government military forces.

History[]

S.H.I.E.L.D. was sanctioned by the US Government, and was initially run by Thaddeus Ross. Ross sanctioned the Weapon X program under John Wraith to capture and further mutate Mutants for government protection. In the early 2000's, Wraith went rogue, exploding Ross' command office when he went to shut down Weapon X. Nick Fury responded to James Howlett's call for help in disbanding Weapon X, and Fury arrived with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and killed Wraith. In Ross' supposed death, Fury was promoted to Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Agents Sharon Carter and James Woo were sent to recapture Otto Octavius after he escaped from a laboratory. Justin Hammer did not cooperate with them, and they were embarrassed by Peter Parker as Spider-Man. They finally captured Octavius, but on live television, a display Carter called the worst of her career. Fury then had to deal with Norman Osborn's reappearance, and warned Peter Parker of him, saying that S.H.I.E.L.D. legally cannot rake action until Osborn does something clearly illegal. That night, Peter confronted Osborn, and fought him, with S.H.I.E.L.D. aiding. Osborn was captured and Peter let free. Fury then formed the Ultimates as a government sanctioned team to deal with super terrorism. Their first mission was stopping Bruce Banner from tearing up New York. S.H.I.E.L.D. later worked with the Ultimates to stop the Chitauri from eliminating free will from the planet. Despite a horrific loss of life in a set-up at Micronesia by the Chitauri, the Ultimates regrouped and defeated the Chitauri in the Battle of Arizona.
