"I'm leaving because I've FAILED...failed as a HUSBAND, failed as a FATHER, and failed as a TEACHER. My books and lectures told the world how man and mutant could live in HARMONY, but I realize now that I was WRONG. Only ONE species may sit at the top of the food chain because that is the NATURAL ORDER of things."
— Charles Xavier

Summary[]
In New Zealand, the X-Men are locked in a vicious battle with a spinoff group from the Brotherhood of Mutants, the Acolytes, while Charles Xavier quietly goes through his daily routine. Xavier leaves a letter for Scott Summers saying that he has failed and that Mutants could never get along with humanity. He intends to go and remove the mental blocks he placed on Erik Lensherr and allow the Brotherhood to continue unchecked. The X-Men return, with James Howlett and Piotr Rasputin showering as Lensherr approaches Xavier in the park, recognizing him. Xavier talks with him and confides that he is closing down the X-Men, as perhaps violence is the only solution. In the Danger Room, Henry McCoy tells Ororo Munroe that he is starting to believe that Xavier is telepathically leading her to love him. Lensherr takes offense to Xavier's suggestions that Magneto might have been right, saying that he has been a fool. Lensherr reveals that he bought rickets to Xavier's now cancelled talk in New York, shocking Xavier, leading him to break down in tears. Disguising themselves, Jean Gray and Summers observe an unconscious Bobby Drake in a medical facility, and eventually kiss. Xavier telepathically sends out notice that class will resume the next day.
