Weapon X was a S.H.I.E.L.D. sanctioned program to exploit the availability of Mutants and use them as government operatives.
History[]
At least before the Gulf War, Weapon X was formed by Thaddeus Ross with John Wraith and Abraham Cornelius heading the project. They recruited Victor Creed, but captured all the other Mutants that they used, including wiping the mind of James Howlett, the infamous Wolverine. After the Gulf War, Howlett escaped, forever angering Wraith. Creed was sent to track him down, and almost got Howlett in New York before briefly recapturing him until the X-Men took Howlett. Wraith used the Mutants Cain Marko, Kurt Wagner, and Creed to capture the X-Men. The mission was successful, and Wraith used the X-Men to rescue Nick Fury and take down a genetics lab run by Atul Pandya. Jean Gray was forced to kill Pandya, or Wraith would have killed Scott Summers. Howlett was finally captured by Wraith, and Wraith used Charles Xavier to detonate a bomb in Ross' office when he revealed that in 2003 Weapon X was going to be shut down. The Brotherhood of Mutants arrived at Weapon X's Finland base to save Howlett, freeing the Mutants. Gray convinced the Mutants to spare Weapon X's men. Wraith was killed anyway by Fury, and Weapon X was disbanded for good.
